The beatitudes in modern times

Dictators can harm you. Their life is a creeping paralysis. Especially many of the readers on our website. Many of my followers have experienced this. But when we show mercy, we find blessing. The hotel, transportation, etc. It is very helpful to have friends who understand what you are trying to achieve and especially to have one who has travelled this path before you.

Peacemakers are persecuted because they present a challenge to authority which compels from the outside but cannot penetrate the interior.


I mean, I agree with the sentiment, but I don't buy the idea that this was the purpose that Jesus had in mind when he gave the Sermon on the Mount.

Each one of us have to adopt the teaching to our own circumstances and personality, make it relevant in our own life and find ways to live the guidance in our own particular way. Alfred Edersheim held a similar or identical view.

It does not mean self-righteousness, the opposite of meekness or poverty of spirit as described above but an understanding and conviction about what is right for oneself in terms of what in alignment with ones spiritual path. I thought that maybe great insights would come to me, as I curled up with my hot coffee and my laptop.

Mercy is the loving disposition towards those who suffer distress. Be blessed and be a blessing! If being blessed were primarily these things, I would argue that Jesus missed the point.

The Beatitudes unique to Matthew are the meek, the merciful, the pure of heart, and the peacemakers. The other four have similar entries in Luke, but are followed almost immediately by "four woes". The term "poor in spirit" is unique to Matthew.
